Girls and boys alike can enjoy making homemade jewelry made from recycled paper goods.  While the imagination of many children goes to designing their own homemade jewelry when they think of beads, the colorful shapes of rolled paper can also be used to decorate other objects or be used to craft a book mark. If the child is not pleased by the thought of using their handicrafts themselves, many can be inspired by the thought that the completed craft can be used as gifts to others.

The homemade project is a good project for those spur of the moment craft activities because all of the items needed are usually already in the home. Bracelets, necklaces and bookmarks can be crafted with glossy paper, glue, pencils, scissors, a ruler and pieces of string or yarn.

Check the recycle container for magazines printed on glossy paper that can be used to make the beads. Let the kids decide on a color for their beads and set them to work tearing out pages with a lot of their chosen colors.

If the children opt for making multi colored beads, any page with colorful pictures can be used.

While the kids are busy tearing out their pages, mom can cut a template to be used for cutting out triangular shapes from the magazine pages. The length of the bead will be determined by the width of the base of the triangle.

Once a template has been made for each child, let them transfer the shape to their glossy paper and cut out the triangles.

Lay the pencil along the base edge of the triangle and roll up toward the point. Ideally, the point should end up in the middle of the bead, but remember, mom, this is a craft. While some adherence to directions should be followed the main objective is a creative and fun activity.

A drop of glue on the back of the glossy paper at the point will hold the paper in place. Gently pull the pencil from the rolled paper and behold the paper bead.

When a number of beads have been crafted they can be strung together. Just run the yarn or string up the middle of the paper bead. If the little fingers can’t manage inserting the string or yarn, a plastic needle will help them with the task.

Once the homemade jewelry beads have been strung, finish off with a slip knot so that the jewelry can be worn.

If the kids are making bookmarks, tie a large knot into one end of a piece of string to keep the beads from falling off. Tie several beaded strings together at the other end.

Leftover jewelry beads can be glued onto almost anything to create a piece of art that the child will be proud to keep or present as a gift.

This is a great project to try. Especially one for a rainy day when you can not get outside. I will have to try it with my preschoolers and let you know how it goes. But I can almost guess they will fall in love with it. What a simple great idea!

Absolutely! Just keep the supplies on hand, and then when your kids need a diversion, you can whip out this awesome project!

This sounds really great, I have always enjoyed beading, I have never though of making them from glossy paper though. I think my kids would love this, can you put a picture up somewhere of the beads?

If you Google image paper beads, it comes up with tons of pictures of really cool kinds you can make!
