Texas is one of the country’s largest states, and because of this, it holds a multitude of opportunities for you to play with your kids.

Free Fun

If you are looking for free fun, Dallas is the best place to look. Both the African American Museum (http://www.aamdallas.org/) and the Hall of State Museum (http://www.hallofstate.com/) offer free admission options. You can visit the Founders Plaza at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to watch the planes take off. A picnic area makes it an all-day experience if you have one who loves planes in the family.

Educational Fun

Texas has several museums that make excellent educational destinations for your family. The Austin Children’s Museum (www.austinkids.org) is one of these. Here your kids can learn to be creative problem solvers through play-based exhibits and programs. The San Antonio Children’s Museum (www.sakids.org) is another option. The theme of this museum is “Where kids play to learn and adults learn to play.” All exhibits are designed to encourage interactive play between kids and their caregivers. If your kids have outgrown children’s museums, consider visiting the Museum of Nature and Science (http://www.natureandscience.org/) in Dallas. The exhibits here are still kid-friendly, but appeal to older kids. Don’t forget to see the life-sized dinosaurs while you are there.

Environmental Fun

The Cedar Ridge Preserve (http://www.audubondallas.org/), formerly the Dallas Nature Center, is a great place to take your kids to go bird watching. It has nine miles of trails and is the native habitat for several species of birds and animals. Big Bend National Park (http://www.nps.gov/bibe/) is another popular outdoor attraction in Texas. Victoria is home to the Texas Zoo (www.texaszoo.org), which has over 40 years of experience in teaching the community about wildlife. Other zoos in Texas include the Houston Zoo (www.houstonzoo.org), the Dallas Zoo (www.dallaszoo.com), the San Antonio Zoo and Aquarium (www.sazoo-aq.org), and the Fort Worth Zoo (www.fortworthzoo.org). Corpus Christi houses the Texas State Aquarium (http://www.texasstateaquarium.org/), a location that is worth seeing at least once with your kids.

Seasonal Fun

No matter where you live, you will find seasonal festivals in your area. During the holiday season, consider visiting Houston for the H-E-B Holiday Parade (www.hebparade.com/), a Southeastern Texas tradition that kicks off the holidays in style. For fall fun, head to a zoo in your area for Halloween events and trick-or-treating.

Just for Mom Fun

When you need your retail fix, consider a tri to Houston to shop at the prestigious Houston Galleria (http://www.simon.com/mall/). For the ultimate spa experience, plan a trip to Austin’s Lake Austin Spa Resort (http://www.lakeaustin.com/), which locals can visit as a day spa.
