In South Carolina you can visit the beach, climb a mountain, or relax in a city museum while your kids play. You will find an endless list of fun things to do in this southern state.

Free Fun

If you have kids who appreciate military history, take them to Kings Mountain National Military Park (http://www.nps.gov/kimo/), where they can see the location of one of the most pivotal battles of the Revolutionary War. A visitor’s center and self-guided tour of the battlefield give guests an appreciation for the victory earned here. If you are near Myrtle Beach, the Marsh Walk near the Apache Pier is free, and you just might get close to alligators while you walk along the boardwalk.

Educational Fun

South Carolina is home to the South’s largest children’s museum, EdVenture (www.edventure.org), which is located in Columbia. A highlight of a visit to EdVenture is the chance to explore EDDIE, a giant statue of a child that kids can crawl inside to see how the human body works. Myrtle Beach also has a children’s museum, the Children’s Museum of South Carolina. Here kids explore their world through touch and experimentation. For an all-encompassing educational experience, take the kids to the South Carolina State Museum (www.museum.state.sc.us) in Columbia, where they can explore exhibits on science, art, history, and everything in between.

Environmental Fun

From the beach to the mountains, South Carolina has a variety of ecosystems and natural wonders for you to explore. To connect your kids with nature, start by visiting one of the state’s many wildlife preserves to get the opportunity to see animals in their natural habitats. The Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge (http://www.fws.gov/caperomain/ ) is one of the best. This 66,000-acre refuge covers barrier islands and salt marshes, and you can take a tour boat from Garris Landing daily to see some of the area. if you want a guarantee that you will be able to see wildlife, head to the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden (www.riverbanks.org) in Columbia. This award-winning zoo houses animals from all over the world. The Greenville Zoo (www.greenvillezoo.com) is another smaller option for those who live too far from Columbia. Too see coastal wildlife up close, head to the South Carolina Aquarium on Charleston Harbor (www.scaquarium.org) in Charleston.

Seasonal Fun

When Christmas rolls around, head to Florence to see Santa’s Magical Village (http://www.santasmagicalvillage.net/smv/), a drive-through light display and festival that is known as the largest Christmas event in the Carolinas. In addition to the light displays, it has rides, a petting zoo, and Santa himself. IN the fall, head to Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens (http://boonehallplantation.com/) for its Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch, which has the largest jumping pillow in the state and a variety of outdoor activities in addition to pumpkins.

Just for Mom Fun

South Carolina has numerous wineries and vineyards, and you can take a tour of some of them or enjoy wine tastings. For some mommy fun, consider visiting Carolina Vineyards Winery (http://www.carolinavineyards.com/) in North Myrtle Beach. If shopping is your preferred form of relaxation, plan a chance to visit Coastal Grand Mall (www.coastalgrand.com), where you can shop till you drop and then hit nearby Myrtle Beach. There is certainly a lot of fun things to do here in South Carolina.
