New Mexico has fun things to do both indoors and outdoors to keep your kids entertained all year long.

Free Fun

If you need free ideas for fun for your kids, Alburquerque is the city to visit. You can take your kids to the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center (http://www.indianpueblo.org/) to see Native American dances, or you can tour the National Atomic Museum (http://www.atomictourist.com/) or the Art Museum of Albuquerque (http://www.cabq.gov/museum/). The Petroglyph National Monument (http://www.nps.gov/) is also popular with those who appreciate historically significant locations. There is a nominal parking fee for Petroglyph National Monument, but no entrance fee.

Educational Fun

The Santa Fe Children’s Museum (www.santafechildrensmuseum.org) is an ideal place to spend a day that is too hot or too rainy to be outside. Here your kids can make works of art from recycled materials, build with magnets, create with bubbles, and explore physics concepts using balls and raceways. Explora! (http://www.explora.us/) in Albuquerque, which won the 2010 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, offers interactive exhibits in both English and Spanish for children of all ages. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (http://www.nmnaturalhistory.org/), located in Albuquerque, offers an up close look at dinosaurs and a variety of traveling exhibits covering all aspects of science.

Environmental Fun

The Wildlife West Nature Park (http://www.wildlifewest.org/), located just outside of Albuquerque, holds a mix of animals that cannot be released into the wild, allowing guests to see them in realistic looking environments and participate in educational outreach opportunities surrounding these animals. The city of Albuquerque has the BioPark (http://www.cabq.gov/biopark/), which has a botanic garden, zoo, beach, and aquarium, that makes an excellent spot to visit to learn about the environment. For an underground natural experience, take your kids to Grants to visit Bandera Center and the Ice Caves (http://www.icecaves.com/), underground caves that never reach temperatures above 31 degrees, so they are always icy and create stunning displays.

Seasonal Fun

If you live near Old Town Albuquerque or Santa Fe, plan to take a drive through the streets to see the luminary displays set out every Christmas. Albuquerque’s’ BioPark offers the River of Lights every Christmas, with holiday entertainment and a stunning light display on the river. All is the time for hot air balloon festivals in New Mexico, the biggest of which is the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, which happens in early October.

Just for Mom Fun

New Mexico has several hot springs, and resort spas around these make an ideal retreat for the busy single mom. For instance, the Ojo Calienta Mineral Springs Resort and Spa (http://www.ojospa.com/ ) lets guests indulge in healing mineral waters. Consider planning an overnight at this spa, which is considered one of the top 10 mineral spas in the country.
