Fun Things to Do in New Jersey

New Jersey’s shoreline provides hours of fun things to do for the family, but you will find other attractions in addition to the beach to keep your kids entertained, and even provide some education as well.

Free Fun

The Atlantic City Historical Museum ( offers video presentations and exhibits about the city’s history and is always free to the public. If your kids love Atlantic City or love history, they might enjoy this museum. In Titusville, you can let your kids see what life was like in the year 1900 at the Howell Living History Farm ( The Cape May County Park and Zoo ( is open daily and is free. While small, it has lovely displays and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Educational Fun

The New Jersey Children’s Museum ( is located in Paramus and offers interactive exhibits that encourage play and sneak a little learning into the mix. Dover is home to the Community Children’s Museum (, which is open Thursdays through Sundays and offers hands-on experimental play for children ages six months to 10 years.
The Liberty Science Center in Jersey City ( appeals to children of all ages, including those over the age of 10. One of its most popular displays is the Bug Zoo, which houses creepy crawlies of all shapes and sizes. The Newark Museum ( is the state’s largest museum. It features a mini zoo, planetarium, sculpture garden, and collections of art and natural science exhibits from around the world.

Environmental Fun

The Space Farms Zoo and Museum ( is an intriguing place to visit with your kids. Located in Sussex, it houses the largest collection of North American animals in the country and has over 500 animals on site. In addition to the animals, it has a museum that showcases artifacts from American history, including a children’s toy museum.  If you live or plan to travel near the shore, consider spending some time at Wildwoods (, which was voted to have the best beaches in the state.

Seasonal Fun

The Cape May County Park and Zoo has numerous seasonal events, including visits from Santa and the Easter Bunny. In the fall, head to the park for Boo at the Zoo, a Halloween event. The fall is a great time to visit one of New Jersey’s farms to pick pumpkins and other fall produce. Schaefer Farms ( in Flemington is a popular option, and it hosts an annual Fright Fest. If your kids want to see Santa, consider booking a spot on the Santa Claus Train Rides in Morris County on with the Whippany Railway Museum (

Just for Mom Fun

New Jersey has several wineries that make for an excellent idea for a girl’s night out. Consider the beautiful Alba Vineyard in Milford as your destination of choice. If you would prefer to shop for something more tangible, head to Jersey Gardens (, the state’s largest outlet mall.
