Everywhere you look in Nevada, you will exciting and fun things to do with your kids, and even a few things to do for just mom.

Free Fun

For numerous free activities, head to Las Vegas and avoid the casinos in favor of the myriad of kids activities in the city. Many are offered free of charge, such as the Fremont Street Experience (http://www.vegasexperience.com/) light show or the Bellagio Water Show (http://www.bellagio.com/amenities/) and the Lion Habitat at the MGM Grand Hotel (http://www.mgmgrand.com/entertainment/). If you don’t feel up to a trip to Las Vegas or the non-kid friendly atmosphere of Sin City, consider spending the day in Great Basin National Park (http://www.nps.gov/).

Educational Fun

Nevada has numerous science and children’s museums that let kids learn through experiencing their world. Nevada Discovery Museum (www.nvdm.org) in Reno is one of these. The Lied Discovery Children’s Museum (www.ldcm.org) in Las Vegas is another, and this won a spot on Nickelodeon’s Parent’s Picks Awards list in 2010. The University of Nevada, Reno has the Fleischmann Planetarium & Science Center (http://planetarium.unr.nevada.edu/), is designed for older children and adults who love science.

Environmental Fun

The heat in Nevada can be quite intense, but on milder days, take the kids to Valley of Fire State Park (http://parks.nv.gov/) to check out the visitor’s center’s interactive displays, take a hike, or enjoy a picnic together. Lake Mead (http://www.nps.gov/lake/) is another popular outdoor attraction in the state. Here you can boat, swim, fish, hike, and simply enjoy the sights of the desert surrounding the lake. If you live in the southern half of the state, the Southern Nevada Zoo in Las Vegas (http://www.lasvegaszoo.com/) is a popular activity for animal-loving children. Sierra Safari Zoo in Reno (http://www.sierrasafarizoo.org/) is another zoo in the state. It is a small zoo that lets visitors get a closer look at some of the animals than is possible at larger facilities.

Seasonal Fun

In the fall, the College of Southern Nevada offers a Fall Fun Fest that is exciting for the entire family. At the Fun Fest, vendors and craft displays provide shopping opportunity for mom, while the rides and carnival games entertain the kids. It also offers a trick-or-treating event and occurs around Halloween. For winter fun, consider a trip to the Lake Tahoe region, where Borges Sleigh Rides (http://www.sleighride.com/) takes your family on an authentic winter sleigh ride through the snow.

Just for Mom Fun

Las Vegas is the place to go for a fun night out without the kids. Whether you want to hit the casinos, go to a spa, catch a more mature show, or do some shopping, you will find it all on the strip.
