Fun Things to Do in Nebraska

From Lincoln to Omaha and everywhere in between, Nebraska has numerous fun things to do to make excellent days out with your kids.

Free Fun

In Boy’s Town in Omaha, you can visit the original buildings established by Father Flanagan in the early 1900s for homeless and delinquent boys. The facility still operates today as a home for struggling children, and it may give your children the chance to appreciate the stability you are trying to offer. Agate Fossil Beds National Monument (http://www.nps.gov) is another free attraction in Nebraska, offering a visitors center filled with fossils and Native American artifacts.

Educational Fun

For educational fun, head to Omaha and visit the Omaha Children’s Museum (http://www.ocm.org), which holds interactive exhibits focusing on history, science, and art. Lincoln also has a children’s museum, the Lincoln Children’s Museum (http://www.lincolnchildrensmuseum.org), which covers three floors and has over 23,000 square feet of exhibit space for climbing and learning. In Aurora, the Edgerton Explorit Center (http://www.edgerton.org) offers science based exhibits and demonstrations for children of all ages.

Environmental Fun

If you live in Nebraska, you must take your children to the Omaha Zoo (http://www.omahazoo.com) at least once. It is one of the most famous zoos in the Midwest, offering so much to see and do that you may need two days to see it all. A highlight of a trip to the Omaha Zoo is the chance to see the world’s largest indoor desert. To see the outdoors outside of the confines of a zoo, head to the Niobrara National Scenic River (http://www.nps.gov) in Valentine. Here you can float or canoe in the summer months, go horseback riding, or simply enjoy a picnic together on the shores of the lake.

Seasonal Fun

Each fall, Grand Island hosts the Harvest of Harmony (http://www.harvestofharmony.tv), is one of the largest parades in the state, and definitely something worth seeing. If you live near Omaha, you can experience Christmas in Germany at the German-American Society, which includes crafts, foods, and activities with a German holiday theme.

Just for Mom Fun

If you need a facial or massage and a break from the stresses of life, head to Lincoln or Omaha, both of which have excellent day spas, like the Atlantis Salon and Spa in Lincoln (http://www.atlantissalonandspa.com) or LifeSpa in Omaha (http://lifetimefitness.com). For an excellent shopping experience, head to Westroads Mall (www.westroadsmall.com).
