Fun Things to Do in Maryland

Maryland sits so close to Washington DC that you might automatically think of the capital when planning activities, but there’s plenty of fun things to do within the state.

Free Fun

In Adamstown, the Lilypons Water Garden ( offers a free attraction. Your kids can wander among acres of ponds filled with brilliantly colored aquatic flowers and Koi fish. The water lilies will be in full bloom in mid summer. For historic fun, head to the Hampton National Historic Site (, which has a 1700s estate on display in Towson.

Educational Fun

For the ultimate in learning through play, take your kids to the Port Discovery Children’s Museum in Portland ( Here they can create, explore, touch, and play in one of the country’s best children’s museums. Other children’s museums include the Chesapeake Children’s Museum ( and the Rose Hill Manor Park and Children’s Museum ( in Frederick. The Maryland Science Center ( in Baltimore has exhibits that highlight the natural and ecologic science of the Chesapeake Bay region, as well as general science topics.

Environmental Fun

Baltimore is home to the National Aquarium (, which is an attraction you should take your children to at least once. In addition to traditional aquarium attractions, it offers a hands-on dolphin encounter program. The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore ( is another way to get your kids close to nature. It is open year-round and offers special events like breakfast with the animals. For more simple outdoor fun, head to the eastern shore to play on the beach and explore the natural areas of the Chesapeake Bay region. Deep Creek Lake ( is the state’s largest freshwater lake and is another popular spot to take kids for natural fun.

Seasonal Fun

Fall fun is abundant in Maryland. Picking your own fruit, especially apples, peaches, and blueberries, is a common fall activity. Homestead Farm ( in Poolesville is one such farm you might want to plan a trip to. For Christmas light displays, head to the Watkins Regional Park in Upper Marlboro for a two-mile long display, and you can also hitch a ride on the community’s trolley for just $5 and avoid driving through the popular display.

Just for Mom Fun

When you need time to  unwind,  head to the David Alexander Salon and Spa ( in Annapolis for a massage, facial, or pedicure. To indulge in some retail therapy without breaking your budget to badly, head to Hanover to shop at the Arundel Mills. Maryland also has many wine trails ( that might make for a relaxing day away from the stresses of single mom life.
