Maine may be a small state, but its blend of coastline and mountains combined with winter fun provides hours of fun things to do for your kids.

Free Fun

If you have your own ski equipment and your kids are good skiers, take them to the 10th Mountain Ski Club ( near Fort Kent. Here you can ski 15 ½ miles of groomed trails, including 2 miles that are lighted at night, for free. The club also opens a 1-mile look to roller skiers and roller bladers in the non-snow months. If you prefer indoor fun, visit Bar Harbor for a free tour of the Bar Harbor Whale Museum (, which highlights the natural and historical significance of these marine mammals. For additional free fun in the summer, take the kids to the beach.

Educational Fun

The Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine ( in Portland offers kids-sized plays and musicals along with indoor exhibits that encourage hands-on learning about art, science, and social sciences. It also has a seasonal outdoor space complete with a shipyard and pirate ships. If your kids love dinosaurs and you love science, head to Folsom Hall of the University of Maine at Presque Isle to the Northern Maine Museum of Science ( Also popular is the Maine Discovery Museum ( in Bangor, which is part science museum, part children’s museum.

Environmental Fun

To combine outdoor adventure with an amusement park, head to York’s Wild Kingdom (, which has a petting zoo, a few exotic animals, and a small amusement park. The Butterfly Kingdom is particularly popular. The DEW Animal Kingdom ( is a small, intimate zoo experience that is privately owned, allowing its guests to get close to many wild creatures.  Maine has gorgeous outdoor scenery for you to explore as well. For hiking along coastal mountains and the chance to spot a bald eagle, head to Mount Blue State Park in Weld (

Seasonal Fun

One of the best things to do in the fall in Maine is to take a drive through the mountains in the northern part of the state to take in the breathtaking fall colors. Peak color times are typically in early October. Stop along your drive at some of the pumpkin patches nestled in the hills. Waterville hosts a Christmas festival called Kringleville, which recreates Santa’s home and offers shopping and holiday events.

Just for Mom Fun

For the ultimate mom’s getaway, head to the Cliff House Resort and Spa ( in Ogunquit. Enjoy coffee on your patio overlooking the ocean or take a spa treatment in a spa where no kids are allowed. For shopping fun, skip the mall and head to Portland, Bath, or Rockland to shop in their quaint, historic downtown shopping districts.
