Kentucky offers an array of fun things to do. From the rolling hills of bluegrass country to the winding banks of the Mississippi, Kentucky has something for everyone.

Free Fun

The Lexington area has many fun and free activities. if you have a horse lover in your family, head to the Keeneland Race Course or the Red Mile Harness Track in the morning to watch the horses workout without the crowds of race day, or head to Thoroughbred Park where life-size bronze statues of racing horses play. Many of the horse farms around bluegrass land allow guests free of charge, but you should plan a small tip. The Actors Theatre (www.actorstheatre.org) in Louisville hosts a season of free plays each year from August to May, and some may be family friendly.

Educational Fun

Kentucky has numerous science and children’s museum, and even has one of the only Creation Science Museums in the world (www.creationmuseum.org), located near Cincinnati in the northern part of Kentucky. Explorium in Lexington (www.explorium.com), formerly the Lexington Children’s Museum, offers hands on exhibits in one of the oldest children’s museums in the country. It appeals to children of all age groups. For a more traditional science museum experience, head to the Owensboro Museum of Science and History (www.owensboromuseum.com) in Owensboro.

Environmental Fun

The Louisville Zoo (www.louisvillezoo.org) is a popular activity among families living in Kentucky. To give your kids a glance at life under the sea, head to the Newport Aquarium (www.newportaquarium.com). Be sure to arrive before 10 to catch a glimpse of the Penguin Parade in the plaza outside of the aquarium. This aquarium has several hands-on areas, including two touch pools, with one including sharks. To visit nature without fences and tanks, head to Columbus Belmont State Park (http://parks.ky.gov/), where your kids can play along the banks of the Mississippi River, or visit Cumberland Falls State Resort Park (http://parks.ky.gov/findparks/), to see the Moonbow, which only appears when there is a full moon and cannot be seen anywhere else in the country.

Seasonal Fun

Much of the seasonal fun in Kentucky revolves around the racing scene. Plan to spend some time near the horses during racing season. in Utica, the Trunnell’s Farm Market an Family Fun Acre (http://www.trunnellsfarmmarket.com/) provides seasonal produce and baked goods throughout the year. this is especially fun during the fall harvest season, when corn, pumpkins, and apples are abundant. During Christmas, be sure to visit Owensboro’s RiverPark Center (www.riverparkcenter.org), where Santa and the gang welcome kids with a carousel, lights, food vendors, ice skating, and live musical entertainment. There is even a giant screen showing holiday films all season long.

Just for Mom Fun

Sometimes mom needs a break, and a spa is a great place to go. In Lexington, consider booking treatments at the Posh Salon and Spa (http://www.poshsalonandspa.com/), or in Louisville, choose the Z Salon and Spa (http://www.zsalon.com/). To shop till you drop, visit one of the biggest malls in the state, the Fayette Mall in Lexington (http://www.shopfayette-mall.com/).
