In Indiana, you can find lots of fun things to do that are both entertaining and educational options for keeping the kids busy. These range from award-winning museums to breathtaking natural parks.

Free Fun

If you have a history buff in your brood, spend a day visiting Fort Knox II in Vincennes (http://www.vincennescvb.org/attractions/), which was originally built in 1809 and once housed Zachary Taylor. The fort itself is gone, but you can see historic markers that show where it once stood. As an added bonus, the open area is a great space for kids to run and play. You can also visit Falls of the Ohio State Park in Clarksville (http://www.fallsoftheohio.org/) and see one of the largest naturally exposed fossil beds in the country. Your kids will get a kick out of scrambling over the fossils to try and identify some of them.

Educational Fun

Imagine a place where a dinosaur is literally coming through the window. That is what you will see at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (http://www.childrensmuseum.org/), which AOL Travel ranks as one of the Top 10 children’s museums in the country. The Muncie Children’s Museum (www.munciechildrensmuseum.com) is also popular, with a Dino Dig exhibit and model trains to watch. The WonderLab Museum of Health, Science, and Technology (http://www.wonderlab.org/) in Bloomington is ideal for older kids and younger kids alike, with a two-story tall Grapevine Climber as a highlight for many visiting the museum.

Environmental Fun

Take a walk on the wild side at the Indianapolis Zoo (www.indianapoliszoo.com), where giant bats, penguins, and even dolphins await your children. If you crave a trip to the ocean, avoid the hassle of the airport and head to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore (http://www.nps.gov/indu/), where you can play on the beach, watch Karner Blue butterflies in their natural habitat, or spend some time hiking through forested trails. Turkey Run State Park (http://www.turkeyrunstatepark.com/) is also popular among those who enjoy spending time outdoors. Consider visiting in the fall, when the foliage lights up the Sugar Creek with its brilliant display.

Seasonal Fun

If you live near Indianapolis, head to the Indianapolis Zoo at Christmas for the Kroger Christmas at the Indianapolis Zoo. Visit nocturnal animals and see light displays while celebrating the season in a wild style. In the fall, apple orchards and pumpkin patches abound throughout the state. In Seymour, the annual Oktoberfest event provides fun for all with hot air balloon races, carnival games, and more.

Just for Mom Fun

If you travel to the Spa at French Lick (http://www.frenchlick.com/), you can rest and relax with spa treatments that feature the healing Pluto Mineral Spring waters. For relaxation in the form of shopping, visit the Castleton Square Mall in Indianapolis (http://www.simon.com/mall/), the largest mall in the state with over 130 specialty stores and four major department stores.
