While the beach holds plenty of fun, sometimes single moms in Hawaii are looking for something a little different. Here are some of the top fun things to do with your kids on the islands.

Free Fun

Hawaii is packed with free attractions for visitors and residents alike. Dole Plantation (www.dole-plantation.com), one of the most popular attractions on the islands, is free to visitors. You can learn how pineapples are farmed, feed Koi in a giant fish pond, and taste fresh pineapple harvested in front of your eyes. Admission to the plantation is free, but attractions like the Pineapple Garden Maze and the Pineapple Express Train Tour do cost money. You can also visit the site of the Pearl Harbor attack (www.pearlharborhistoricsites.org) for free, but arrive early, because the free tickets are first-come, first-served. If you live or visit near Waikiki Beach, head to the beach 2 hours before sunset on a Saturday or Sunday for live music, followed by free Movie on the Beach after the sun goes down.

Educational Fun

The Bishop Museum (www.bishopmuseum.org) in Honolulu houses science and natural history exhibits of all types, including many that highlight the archeological history of Hawaii. The Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center (www.discoverycenterhawaii.org), also in Honolulu, has hands-on discovery exhibits, including the Hawaiian Rainbows exhibit that highlights life in Hawaii. Educational fun in Hawaii can also be centered around the island culture. Consider taking your kids to a hula event, many of which are free to the public, to get a taste for the cultural heritage of the islands.

Environmental Fun

Akaka Falls State Park (http://www.hawaiistateparks.org/) offers a lovely hike through some of the islands’ most beautiful foliage to Akaka Falls, a 442-foot waterfall steeped in legend. Diamond Head State Monument on Oahu (http://www.hawaiistateparks.org/) is another natural attractions to consider visiting, provided your kids can handle the somewhat strenuous hike. Here you can climb into the crater of an extinct volcano and see breathtaking views of the islands. To take your kids to the zoo, visit the Honolulu Zoo (http://honoluluzoo.org/), the largest zoo on the islands.

Seasonal Fun

If you will be in Honolulu around Christmas time, head to the historic capital district for the Honolulu City Lights tree lighting ceremony, held after Thanksgiving. The Hawaii Kai Christmas Boat Parades in Honolulu Harbor is another popular seasonal activity. In September, plan to participate in the Aloha Festivals (www.alohafestivals.com), which are held on every island and feature cultural displays, parades, street parties, and other great holiday celebrations.

Just for Mom Fun

As a hot vacation spot, Hawaii has its fair share of spas for mom to use when she needs a break. The Fairmont Kea Lani Maui Resort (www.fairmont.com/kealani) has one of these. Sit back and relax with a massage or facial while you get rid of the cares that often plague single moms. For shopping fun, visit the Royal Hawaiian Center (www.royalhawaiiancenter.com) for shopping and dining on Honolulu.
