When you live in Delaware, too often the allure of the Washington DC area draws your family. Yet, Delaware itself offers plenty of its own fun things to do with your kids!

Free Fun

For free nature based fun, visit the Dupont Nature Center (www.dupontnaturecenter.org) at the Mispillion Lighthouse. Here you can watch migratory birds and spend some time on the beach, all with no admission charge. If you have boys who love planes, visit the Air Mobility Command Museum in Dover (www.amcmuseum.org), which houses a collection of military aircraft and educational exhibits, all free of charge.

Educational Fun

The Delaware Children’s Museum (www.delawarechildrensmusuem.org) is a must-see for moms of younger children. Hands on exhibits allow children to explore basic science concepts and the world around them. This is perfect for a rainy or snowy Saturday when you just want to be out of the house. The museum claims to have exhibits for everyone from toddlers to preteens, so bring all of he kids for a morning of interactive fun. The Delaware Museum of Natural History (www.delmnh.org) is another option. Here you can walk over a coral reef replica, explore dinosaur bones, or touch and feel real dinosaur fossils in the Discovery Room. It has a butterfly garden and nature trail as well.

Environmental Fun

The Brandywine Zoo (www.brandywinezoo.org) is the state’s only zoo. It is located in Wilmington and houses approximately 150 animals in natural habitats. The small size of the zoo makes it possible to see it all in just a few hours. The Delaware Nature Society (www.delawarenaturesociety.org) maintains several nature centers throughout the state, which host events targeted toward children. At the kids can learn about organic gardening at the Coverdale Farm or the wetland habitat at the Abbott’s Mill Nature Center.

Seasonal Fun

Each year, the Governor’s House is open to the public one day in December for a Christmas Open House. If your kids like mansions and Christmas decorations, this would be a fun winter activity. The Brandywine River Museum (www.brandywinemuseum.org) offers a holiday event complete with toy railroad, Victorian dollhouses, and holiday trees, in addition to its regular exhibits and attractions. For fall fun, visit the Wicked R Ranch in Wyoming, Delaware (www.wickedr.com). They have a corn play bin, train rides, straw playground, corn maze, and pumpkin activities for everyone each weekend in October.

Just for Mom Fun

When you are ready for some time alone, hire a babysitter and head to the Kallima U spa in Dover (www.kallimaspa.genbook.com) for some grown up pampering. If you would be interested in wine tasting, visit the Fenwick Wine Cellars in West Fenwick (www.fenwickwinecellars.com). If shopping is more your thing, the Tanger Outlet Center in Rehoboth Beach (http://www.tangeroutlet.com/rehoboth) offers over 130 outlet stores.
