Connecticut has everything you need to spend some time having fun with your kids. From shopping malls to beaches and historic sites, you will find fun things to do.

Free Fun

Whether you want to explore history or nature, Connecticut has several free options for your family to enjoy. If you are a mom of boys, you may want to visit the Submarine Force Library and Museum in Groton (www.ussnautilus.org). This museum is always free to the public, and here your kids can explore a submariner, the USS Nautilus, and see just what life was like for its crew. The museum houses replicas and artifacts from America’s submarine heritage. For a natural experience, visit Silver Sands State Park in Milford (http://www.ct.gov/DEP/), where you can swim and play on a free beach while bird watching or salt water fishing.

Educational Fun

The Children’s Museum (www.thechildrensmuseumct.org) in West Hartford houses hands-on exhibits for kids of all ages. You will enter the museum through a sperm whale replica complete with spraying water from a blow hole. The museums wildlife sanctuary houses nearly 80 species of exotic animals rescued from various parts of the state. The Connecticut Science Center (www.ctsiencecenter.org) offer hands-on exhibits in Hartford ranging from weather to sports to physics. It has a KidSpace designed for grades 2 and younger, so everyone feels welcome.

Environmental Fun

To teach the kids about wildlife, head to Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo (www.beardsleyzoo.org) in Bridgeport, the state’s only accredited zoo. It has over 300 animals for your kids to learn about, and is small enough that you can do it in just an afternoon if you wish. To see underwater wildlife, visit the Mystic Aquarium Institute for Exploration in Mystic (www.mysticaquarium.org), where your kids can learn about Beluga whales, penguins, jelly fish, and a wide range of underwater creatures. If you prefer to be outdoors learning about nature, you will find everything form beaches to forests to mountains in this state. Consider Mohawk Mountain State Forest or Burr Pond State Park.

Seasonal Fun

If you are looking for seasonal fun, visit the Trolley Museum in East Windsor (www.ct-trolley.org). It has an Easter Bunny Fun Day, Rails to the Darkside for Halloween, a Pumpkin Patch event, and a Winterfest complete with Santa on the trolley. Apple picking is a popular fall activity, and Maple Lane Farms (www.maplelane.com) offers apples as well as berries and pumpkins from its location in Preston.

Just for Mom Fun

Sometimes mom needs her own grown-up fun. In Washington, plan a mom’s day out at the Mayflower Spa (www.mayflowerinn.com), where you can indulge in spa treatments and massages. If you prefer to spend your money at a mall, plan a visit to the Milford’s Westfield Connecticut Post Mall (http://westfield.com/connecticutpost/), one of the largest in the state.
